Based on a remarkable true story, "Remember the Titans" follows the explosive dramatic events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 when African-American football coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) was hired to guide an integrated but racially polarized high school team, the T.C. Williams Titans. Angry, stubborn and a rigid task master, Boone faces a cool reception from the team's players as well as an awkward relationship with assistant coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), a local white coach with seniority and a tradition of winning who was bypassed for the job. As the two men learn to overcome their ignorance and bigotry and realize that they have much in common and integrity, honor and a strong work ethic. They work together to transform a group of angry unfocused players into a dynamic winning team of responsible young men. Remember the Titans touches on racism—a topic that, let’s be honest, will always be relevant. But I feel like back in the early 2000s, American films tackled it in a more heartfelt and genuine way than some of the heavy-handed approaches we see today. This film is centered around American football, and you might think that if you’re not into the sport, the movie wouldn’t resonate—but that’s not the case at all, which is impressive in itself. The filmmakers crafted a compelling story about a team dealing with racism, and they tackled it head-on. By the end, you’re rooting for everyone on screen, and the heavy dose of patriotism and sentimentality doesn’t feel out of place. Everything just works here, and it turns out to be a truly feel-good movie that lands exactly where it should.

This high school version of Any Given Sunday is not only about what is happening, but also about moral value. There are winks and reading between the lines, fewer muscles, fewer sharp elbows, less hi-tech, but more integrity, family, and traditional values.
